Prevent costly damages. We can avoid potentially larger damages later on if we act now to address climate impacts [See Stern Review].  It is usually more cost-effective to prevent damages from occurring in the first place rather than having to pay for damages after the fact.  Putting a back-up valve in place on a sewer system is more cost-effective than paying for flood damage if the system overflows.

Seize emerging opportunities. Adaptation also allows us to take advantage of new opportunities that may arise as seasons become longer and warmer.  Tourism may expand in the summer months or farmers may be able to grow new crops that they couldn’t grow before.

Lessen liability. Adaptation may also help to reduce personal or corporate liability.  By taking action to lessen the impacts of climate change on vulnerable groups or systems, we can ensure that due diligence has been taken.
